Plants for Tricky Areas

Many gardens have an area that needs special care when choosing plants. It may be a very dry and sunny spot, or it may be shady and moist. This can cause some problems, especially if you have your heart set on growing a particular plant! However, do not despair!  Plants have adapted over time to survive in even the harshest of conditions so there is the perfect plant for every difficult area. The following is a list of some plants you may wish to consider for those tricky spots.

Exposed areas

Exposed spots will not support delicate plants. Only tough and strong plants will survive, but these need not be unattractive plants! The following are happy in such areas:

  • Berberis spp.
  • Cotoneaster spp.
  • Ilex spp.
  • Cytisus spp.
  • Buddleja daviddii
  • Viburnum spp.

Sunny Areas

Sunny spots will dry out quite quickly and can prove difficult for fragile plants. The following are perfect for a sunny spot:

  • Cistus
  • Chaenomoeles spp.
  • Santolina spp.
  • Achillea spp.
  • Agapanthus spp.
  • Geranium spp.
  • Helianthemum spp.
  • Rosmarinus spp.

Shady spots

Shady spots will not be good for our sun-loving friends but can support the following beautiful plants:

  • Camellia spp.
  • Daphne spp.
  • Euonymus spp.
  • Kerria japonica
  • Mahonia spp.
  • Salix spp.
  • Vinca spp.

Alkaline Soil

Alkaline soil has a high lime content and will therefore be unsuitable for acid-loving plants like Rhododendron and heathers. The following plants, however, do appreciate some lime:

  • Aster
  • Agapanthus spp.
  • Aubretia cultivars
  • Deutzia spp.
  • Hebe spp.
  • Syringa

Acid Soil

Acidic soils can support an array of beautiful plants that provide spectacular floral displays:

  • Rhododendron
  • Camellia
  • Magnolia
  • Erica
  • Pieris

Dry Soil

Dry soils can be as a result of being a sunny spot or because moisture is easily lost, such as in sandy soils.

  • Achillea spp.
  • Corydalis spp
  • Geranium
  • Nepeta
  • Sedum
  • Cistus
  • Cosmos
  • Lathyrus
  • Hebe
