Springtime in your Garden

It's official! Spring is on the way.  The birds are singing, the buds are beginning to grow and it's time to start thinking about your garden.  Spring is an exciting time for your garden - the days are longer, the air is milder and everything is coming to life.  There's no better time to start planning your plants for a spectacular Spingtime display.

 Daffodils

Spring is a busy time in the garden with a great deal of work to be done to help it shake off the winter blues.  Horticolour can help you in this task, with advice on what to do and how to do it.  The following pages are designed with you in mind, providing you with an idea of what jobs can be done in your garden, the plants you can choose to add interest to your Springtime display, and what Horticolour can do for you.

Jobs to do in the Garden

Spring is the time to start making plans and preparations. The following jobs can be done now:

  • Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering
  • Prune hardy evergreen hedges
  • Prune Wisteria
  • Chit potato tubers
  • Deadhead winter-flowering pansies
  • Divide herbaceous perennials
  • Plant summer bulbs in the greenhouse
  • Monitor frosty conditions both in and out of the greenhouse
  • Prepare seed beds
  • Clean up pots in preparation for planting
  • Prepare ground for laying new lawns
  • Watch out for slugs and snails emerging to attack new perennial shoots
  • Check garden machinery
  • Repot, water and feed over-wintered Fuchsia
  • Pick up dead leaves to limit the spread of Botrytis
  • Re-pot container plants
  • Sow half-hardy annuals under glass
  • Call Horticolour for advice on garden design and maintenance!

Weather Considerations

While the snow and ice appear to be a distant memory, it is wise to remember that early Spring weather can throw a few surprises our way.  There is still a risk of sharp frosts so all tender plants still require protection. The ground will still be cold and damp and is therefore not good for sowing seed. The wind can also be a factor in Springtime, with gales and strong gusts a distinct possibility. It is wise to use stakes and ties to provide stability to plants that are susceptible to windy conditions, together with fleece wraps and cloches for added protection.
